Profile

Dr. M. Catherine Cleaveland is an Assistant Professor of Accounting at the Stetson School of Business and Economics who joined Mercer University in July 2009. Prior to this, she was an Assistant Professor of Accounting at Kennesaw State University. She obtained her doctoral degree from Georgia State University and holds a Master of Taxation degree. 

Dr. Cleaveland's research interests are in the areas of corporate taxation, dividend imputation, and the IRS continuous audit program. Her dissertation focusing on the effect changes in shareholder-level dividend taxes have on corporate spending was the recipient of the 2007 American Taxation Association/PricewaterhouseCoopers Outstanding Tax Dissertation Award from the American Accounting Association. Dr. Cleaveland also investigates methods for improving student learning. For her work in this area, Dr. Cleaveland received the 2004 American Taxation Association Deloitte Teaching Innovation Award.

Additionally, Dr. Cleaveland serves as a faculty representative for the IRS/Practitioner's Liaison Committee and on the Board of Directors of Embracing Differences. She is also on the Anti-Prejudice Consortium Committee and an American Red Cross volunteer CPR instructor.
