Frequently asked questions

Why do I need to meet with an advisor?
Your academic advisor can assist you with everything from course selection, to program planning, to degree completion preparedness. If you have a question, your advisor can either help answer it for you or point you toward the person who can.

When should I meet with an advisor?
Students are required to meet with an academic advisor before the start of any program. Once you begin taking courses, it is recommended that you speak with your advisor once per semester, or anytime you have an issue you cannot resolve via other resources.

How do I change my major or concentration?
Please consult your advisor to discuss the impact of changing your degree program. After speaking with your advisor, if you decide to move forward with a major change, simply complete the Program/Major Change Form, and email it to your advisor.

Can I test out of any of my remaining classes?
If you are an undergraduate student, credit is awarded for examinations administered by the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) for scores of 50 or higher on general or subject exams. CLEP credit will not be awarded if the student has already taken the equivalent college-level course.

How do I register for classes?
You can register for classes by using the online registration tool in MyMercer. If you have difficulties with the online registration tool, registration instructions are available on the Registrar’s website.

Where do I find the class schedules?
The schedule of available courses for current and future semesters can be found on the Registrar’s website. (Select your respective campus on the Registrar’s homepage).

How do I find my course syllabus?
The syllabus for each course will be posted in Canvas. If your syllabus is not in Canvas, please contact your instructor. You can find faculty contact information by using the faculty directory.

How do I find my required textbooks?
You can find your required textbooks by using the “Find Textbooks” tool on the Mercer Bookstore’s website.

How do I find the room for my class?
The classrooms for Atlanta courses can be found in MyMercer under the “My Class Schedule” link. For Henry County classes, the classrooms will be posted on a billboard as you enter the building.

How do I contact my instructor?
You can find your instructor’s contact information in the faculty directory.

How do I know if I’m a full-time student or a part-time student?
As an undergraduate student, you must enroll in 12 credit hours per semester to be considered a full-time student, or a minimum of six credit hours per semester to be considered a part-time student.

I’m an online student. What do I need to know?
To prepare for online instruction, you will attend an online orientation to learn relevant information about online learning, including required materials, information on computer specifications, and how to use Canvas. Canvas is Mercer’s course management system that you will use to track and complete your coursework. You will use your Mercer login credentials at canvas.mercer.edu to access the system.

What is the difference between dropping a class and withdrawing from a class?
Dropping a class means that the course is eliminated from your schedule altogether, as if it never existed. Dropping is only available for a short time at the beginning of a semester or session. For the drop/add dates for each term, please check the Registrar’s Academic Calendar.

After the drop/add deadline, if you would like to stop attending a course, you may withdraw from the course if it is not past the “last day to withdraw” as published on the Registrar’s Academic Calendar. The grade for all withdrawn courses is “W,” which has no academic impact.

How do I withdraw from a course?
To withdraw from a course, from all courses in a semester, or from the University, log into MyMercer and use the online withdrawal tool. Before you withdraw, be sure to read the Withdrawal Policy on the Financial Aid website, and consult with your Financial Aid advisor to ensure that there will be no impact on your aid.

Preparing for graduation

When you are two semesters from completing your program, it’s time to start preparing for graduation. Follow the steps below to ensure you are ready.

Submit your graduation application.
Download a copy of the graduation application on the Registrar’s website. When you submit your graduation application, it alerts the Registrar that you are nearing the completion of your program and triggers the processes that lead to the conferral of your degree. We recommend you return it directly to your advisor.

If you plan to attend Commencement, order and pick up your cap and gown.
The Registrar will send out information regarding Commencement to your Mercer email. You can also find information about Commencement on the Registrar’s website.

Review your degree audit.
Shortly after you submit your graduation application, the Registrar will send you a copy of your degree audit. The audit is completed by your academic advisor and will list any remaining requirements necessary to complete your degree. If you have questions about the audit, schedule an appointment with your advisor to discuss where you stand.

Complete your exit examination.
All undergraduate Stetson-Hatcher School of Business students are required to complete an Exit Assessment Examination. Schedule this exam with your advisor.

Returning to Mercer

If you were previously enrolled in a Mercer bachelor's degree program and would like to come back to complete your degree, we're here to help you get started again.
