The Next Big Idea Competition

Each year, the Mercer Innovation Center hosts a business competition called The Next Big Idea, which is designed to encourage Mercer undergraduate students to think creatively and develop their business ideas. The winner in 2019 was Luke Kolbie, ’21, for his idea called Kingfisher Buckle, which is an updated design for use in the belt and strap hardware industry. The comfort, durability, and customization features of their products set Kingfisher Leatherworks apart. As the winner, Luke received $4,500 to use or the development of his business plan. Since winning the competition in 2019, Luke has expanded the products into belts, bags, wallets, and more.
